ABOUT US

Purpose:

The Shepherd's Clinic, Inc., a non-profit, inner-city health clinic, provides primary health care to individuals who do not have health insurance and are not eligible for government-assisted health care, such as Medicare or Medicaid.

Patients are seen by appointment only and pay an hour's wage for an office visit. Those who are not unemployed pay nine dollars at the time of the visit.

A group of dedicated volunteers doctors, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants, and nurses provide patient care. Administrators and other volunteers give added support.

Mission:

To provide quality, low-cost primary health care to those who are unable to afford commercial health insurance and who do not qualify for government assistance.

History:

25% percent of Baltimore City residents lack health insurance. The Shepherd's Clinic provided over 3,000 affordable medical visits in 2006. Doctors, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants and nurses provided thousands of hours of personal attention. On-site services include internal medicine, women's health, psychiatry, cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, physical therapy and nutritional care. Other specialty services are available by referral. Lab work and imaging services are provided at reduced cost.

Partnership:

The Shepherd's Clinic partners with Union Memorial Hospital and University of Maryland Medical Center to train medical residents. Also, many of Union Memorial's active and retired physicians provide specialty consultations, surgery, and other services for needy patients upon referral.
